Club Lunch - Book Talk: Daughter of the Dragon by Yunte Huang
In a world where representation and diversity are becoming more important than ever, the life story of Anna May Wong serves as a poignant reminder of the battles against exploitation and racism faced by Chinese-Americans in the 20th century.
Born in a Chinese laundry in LA, Wong rose to become Old Hollywood’s most famous Chinese-American actress. Her performances captivated global audiences, but she also faced tremendous challenges in an industry plagued by racism and sexism.
Today, Wong’s legacy continues to inspire new generations. Her story is a timely reminder of the struggles faced by marginalized communities and the importance of representation in pop culture.

Chinese culture, deeply influenced by Confucianism, places a strong emphasis on social harmony and the collective well-being of society. Confucianism advocates for moral development, respect for authority, and the importance of family and societal roles. The emphasis on social harmony is reflected in the prioritization of community and societal stability over individual freedoms. In Confucian thought, the self is understood in relation to others and the larger society. Personal behavior and ethical conduct are seen as crucial for maintaining social harmony. This cultural perspective can be seen in how China approaches governance and societal organization, where the interests of the collective often take precedence over individual rights. This Confucian emphasis on social harmony contributes to the Chinese government's approach to free speech and expression. The government tends to regulate and control public discourse to avoid social unrest and maintain stability. This approach is rooted in the belief that unrestricted freedom of speech can lead to disorder and conflict, which would disrupt the harmony of society. Therefore, while the Chinese Constitution does mention freedoms such as speech and assembly, these rights are exercised within the framework of maintaining social order and harmony, reflecting the influence of Confucian values on Chinese governance and culture.

Many Western countries don't have term limits. For example, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and UK. Before 1951, the USA didn't have term limits, either. So why is it a big deal if China eliminates term limits?

Again, Keith is disingenuous. The first known case of the coronavirus was at the start of December. Nobody knew anything about this pathogen. Some doctors were *speculating* on what this virus was and consequently _causing unnecessary public panic._ The government acted responsibly to prevent panic. Even when China reported the coronavirus to WHO at the start of January, they still didn't have a handle on what they were facing. Weeks later, they realized the true nature of the outbreak and subsequently locked down hard. There's nothing to criticize here. China did everything right. Months later, Western countries did everything wrong and consequently they suffered the worst from the pandemic. Keith is trying to second-guess the Chinese government, as if he knows better what to do. What makes him such an expert?

  • @horridohobbies

Keith is disingenuous. The Pew research that shows low favorability is among mainly Western countries, the USA and its allies. The rest of the world are more favorable to China. So the USA and its allies don't like China? Well, you can knock me over with a feather. 😆

Hong Kong has *never* been granted total autonomy. The one country, two systems arrangement gave Hong Kong the power to govern itself, *BUT* anything related to national security fell under the purview of Beijing. In 2019, the Hong Kong riots were driven and supported by external forces (i.e., US intelligence). This was a threat to national security. Basic Law required the Hong Kong Legislative Council to enact a national security law, a responsibility that the LegCo shirked. So, in 2019, Beijing had to step in to correct this oversight. Since the national security law was enacted, all the CIA-backed thugs fled Hong Kong like rats. This is the *only* reason why order and peace was restored to the city. The governance of Hong Kong has not changed. The one country, two systems arrangement is intact. I'm sorry to say that Stephen Roach is simply wrong about this.

What good is free speech if the political system fails to take care of its citizens? Has free speech fixed the numerous domestic problems that afflict the United States (such as homelessness, gun violence, poor health care, poor education, crumbling infrastructure, drug addiction, mass incarceration, growing poverty, political turmoil, etc.)? How has free speech addressed the economic and social chaos in Britain and France and Germany? It seems to me that the FCC is very ideological and much less pragmatic. At any rate, free speech is illusory. It doesn't *really* exist in the West. We punish free speech in many different ways, for example, cancelling or censoring people who speak out against Ukraine and Israel, who support the Palestinians in Gaza.

Liberal democracy is anathema to strong leadership. Just look at the clowns that lead the G7 economies: Biden, Trump, Trudeau, Sunak, Macron, Scholz, etc. Xi Jinping is the best leader China has had since Deng Xiaoping. Here are just a few highlights from his remarkable record: 1. The creation of the Belt and Road Initiative. 2. The advancement of the BRICS organization. 3. The total and final eradication of absolute poverty in 2020. 4. The restoration of order and peace in Hong Kong and Xinjiang *without resorting to violence.* 5. The hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing *during the pandemic!* 6. The construction of the Tiangong space station. So much for the Wolf Amendment. 7. The construction of China's first "supercarrier," the Type 003 Fujian. 8. The protection of the people from COVID-19 with the Zero Covid policy ─ China had, by far, the lowest per capita Covid death rate among all the advanced economies. *Liberal democracy failed to produce governments that could capably and competently deal with the COVID-19 health crisis.*

  • @horridohobbies
    @horridohobbies 4 дня назад

The host questions China's transparency about Covid deaths but she does not provide any evidence to refute China's official numbers. When did innuendo pass for journalistic truth? According to Johns Hopkins, the world's most trusted source for medical information, America had 1,123,836 Covid deaths for a per capita death rate of 341.11 per 100,000 population. China had 101,056 Covid deaths for a per capita death rate of 7.16 per 100,000 population. America’s per capita Covid death rate was *47.64 times greater* than China’s. It’s worth noting that other advanced economies did not fare much better than America: UK - 220,721 deaths, 325.13 per 100,000 population Italy - 188,322 deaths, 311.47 per 100,000 population Germany - 168,935 deaths, 203.16 per 100,000 population France - 166,176 deaths, 254.68 per 100,000 population Spain - 119,479 deaths, 255.54 per 100,000 population Japan - 72,997 deaths, 57.72 per 100,000 population (8.06 times worse than China) Canada - 51,720 deaths, 135.23 per 100,000 population (18.89 times worse than China) They all performed far worse than China. How much worse would China's Covid death rate have to be in order to mitigate this disparity? Did China have millions of Covid deaths? Did we see bodies piling up in hospitals and morgues and fields? And let's be clear: Western pandemic stats are not 100 percent reliable, either.

Success is defined as strong economic growth, social and political stability, and general satisfaction of the populace. By this definition, China is very successful and Western advanced economies are not. Just look at the social and political chaos in the USA, UK and EU. UK and EU economies, in particular, are in free fall. There is rioting in the streets. Political turmoil is tremendous. China, on the other hand, is not afflicted by any of this. Western surveys attest to this fact... According to 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗮'𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 79% of Chinese believe their nation is democratic while only 57% of Americans and 55% of British do. Another example, according to the 𝗘𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 85% of Chinese trust their government while only 40% of Americans and 30% of British do. Another example, according to the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 76% of Chinese trust their politicians while only 29% of Americans and 20% of British do. Another example, according to 𝗜𝗽𝘀𝗼𝘀' 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 91% of Chinese are happy with their life while only 76% of Americans and 70% of British are. Another example, according to 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬, 95.5% of Chinese are satisfied with their government. Another example, according to 𝗜𝗽𝘀𝗼𝘀' 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵, 95% of Chinese believe their country is on the right track and moving in the right direction while only 41% of Americans and 23% of British do. Another example, according to 𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵 𝗨𝗖 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆, 80% of Chinese are happy and enjoy financial security. I’ve gone back 5 years but I could go further back if you like.

Since 1990, China has faced one major challenge after another. It has overcome them all. Since 1990, the West has predicted the collapse of China, annually. Year after year, it has been proven wrong. Today, the West continues to underestimate China. Yes, China faces new challenges but they are not intractable. I have no doubt China will overcome them, too.

  • @harrysung4790

The fundamental problem is the economic system. Communists have ruled the mainland ofr over 75 years or so. Its per capita GDP is still about 1/2 of Taiwan and 1/3 of Hong Kong. Anyone with any sense would realize which kind of economic system is better. Furthermore, Shanghai is undoubtfully still the most affluent region within the nation, why? because Shanghai once was a internatioanl city leased to many capitalistic nations. Free trade has established its foundation. As soon as those at the highest government position understand the basic economic system, China will be the wealthiest nation in the world. After all, the government's function is to provide better lives for its citizens. The security of a regime is based on its citizens' approval. Supression can work for awhile, in the end, an oppressive government will be overthrown anyway. As for Hong Kong they are killing the goose that lays golden eggs.

I don't understand why so many in the comments are offended by the line of questioning. Keith is a man from the West, on a Western program, speaking from a Western perspective. The idea of liberalism is instilled within us, in the West, from birth. China isnt liberal, thats not necessarily a bad thing. The main difference between America and China isnt the politics, its the culture. These questions are important, it gives Li an opportunity to expose us to different ways of thinking. I love what Li says; "We are not focused on procedure. We are focused on outcome." Had Keith not asked these questions these direct questions, we wouldnt have gotten that gem of a quote. Love this video and love Eric Li!

Exactly! Westerners are very *ideological.* The Chinese are very *pragmatic.* Who cares about political ideology? Good governance must manifest in good outcome for the people. Does liberal democracy do this? No! If the government fails to perform, it will be overthrown, just as it has been throughout Chinese history. I don't see a problem with that. The West's obsession with checks and balances does not serve the people well; it perpetuates a system that does not function well. Just look at the state of the West today...in America, in Canada, in Britain, in France and Germany. It's shameful.

He is not wrong about the ideal of 'liberalism' having NOT done a truthful job. Mostly, when the humans running the show are themselves double speakers or corrupt. The conversation perhaps should not be about who is better, the west or china's form of governance but rather who are the people in charge. Some Chinese good governance folks are honest and fair as seen in the opening up of China and some Westerners were honest and fair in the past but unfortunately for all of us, those who will do evil or are wicked are more in number than the good ones, it seems. Humans are inherently competitive wanting do better than the other guy and not always by better brains, mostly it is the criminally minded who are far more successful. But success at what cost? Oligarchs with great buckets of money and multiple ownerships of everything around seem more miserable and wicked. In fact, if you don't give away your wealth or help others you are held in contempt by humanity. Clearly ordinary Chinese people are extremely industrious and they are the ones who actually put China on the map not a few elites in the Politburo, however these politicians have enormous unequal power. Not that the WEST has that perfect, as it is also heavily compromised by those in the know of how to take advantage of the western system. Even, the overseas born Chineses have figured out how to use the western system to do well. Perhaps that is the real best observance; that Chinese people are incredibly focused on how to use ANY SYSTEM. Just look at the education of any nation It will tell you where they are going. Handouts and a heavy protectionist society creates a weak populace. Heavy preferences and quota systems also create a weak populace who simply don't learn about good competition. It is absolutely necessary for innovation, something the Chinese have mastered. They also can take any idea copy it and improve it 10x...so there! But if you ask people where they want to be after they have nailed making money in concrete jungles they choose countries like Switzerland, Greek Islands, India etc. Just anywhere the mind can recover and relax. Our human body just cannot handle continuous high stress money making. So where is the balance? China rarely addresses mental well being, compassion and spirituality like India or the Dalai Lama or Falun Gong.

The senior politicians are schooled in special Communist schools and they compare their system with others. They admire USA and study USA economic systems. They will take the best examples and replicate that but they will not change their political system which has delivered the goods to millions.

I don't reapect this old man talking about Hong Kong in China. The West domination for 99yrs in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong people didn't have any rights to vote and people are mostly slavery workers for powerful rich elite westerners. Neocon Fascist tried to put negative propaganda about China for 100 yrs and teach in Hong Kong education in western thinking and brain washed bunch Chinese to think how bad the china is. Westerner CIA and Christian group tried to creat instability in Hong Kong and retaliation against China. Still now they are non stop to undermind Chinese people and the government. The Westerners are impearlist colonial warmingers and racist. They will do everything to sabotage China government till this date even though Hong Kong is not their territory, but western like the U.S. and British still want to hold their power to continue control Hong Kong people. It is shame on them these elite group that already destroyed America and its people inequality and poverty. Now they want to come here in Hong Kong lecture the Chinese government??? They should keave politic along to allow its own Hong Kong people to flourish into unify with China instead try to make trouble. They should go back to their own country and help to fight the economic problem they created, the national 35 trillion debts, and security boarder issues, Israel war against Gaza and Ukraine war against Russia etc ...but they rather want to act likt they know it all when they were stealing Chinese treasures for more than houndred year and making Hong Kong people live terrible conditions because of the western Imperialist greed. They did that to many middle Eastern countries and Africa countries. They tried to steal resources and enslave the people for their own power and wealth. Hong Kong people wake up and do your own research without rely on Western misinformation and bias talking point!!!!!!

This comments pertaining to the lady commented on # of DEATH was "correctly reported" in the West including N.A..May I asked were those numbers REAL or FAKED ones??..If they are real numbers, I think the funeral companies and those related business's should become billionaire by now..In additions, were there actually names +DOB of those who perished away by COVID19 attacks as those names written on Vietnam Wars memorial walls erected somewhere near Washington DC?🤔?..Period..

I have to agree with Mr. Eric Li, that speech should be regulated since speech is the precursor of actions and chaos if it wasn't under proper monitoring 4 the best of the nation's interests peacefulness as a whole.. As in the West especially in USA 🇺🇸 oftentimes BOASTED ARROGANTLY of "freedom of speech" that were actually FALSE and these journalists are UNDER THE MANIPULATIONS OF BIG CORPORATIONS + government's leadership officials rather than the NEUTRAL news to educate and inform people of the REALITY'S occurring around the Globes..Period..

I agree 100% with constructive criticism, just that in the current political atmosphere it's not easy to tell what is "constructive" among different levels of audience...Stephen talks about Deng Xiaoping's seek of truth, but he was still, to a certain extent, misled during the Tiananmen Sqaure incident. In terms of Hong Kong, I agree that the old paradigm is over, and the elites in Hong Kong are now frozen in face of such change.
